Would you like to make a difference in a life of a child? Become a mentor! AFG is desperately seeking adult mentors to meet the needs of our clients. In addition to providing mentors for girls, we also are seeking male and female mentors to match with a small number of boys, most of whom are the brothers of girls in our program.
To become a mentor, a volunteer must be at least 18 years old. Mentors are required to complete an application, and participate in volunteer and mentor training. Mentors are asked to devote four hours per month for one year to their mentee. Many mentors, however, have stayed with the program for years, seeing their mentee through all of their schooling and beyond. In addition, group activities are held once a month, including ice skating, bowling, movie nights, and theater.

When I signed up to be a mentor with Alternatives For Girls back in 2001, I sought to make a difference in the life of a young girl. But little did I know she’d also make a difference in mine.
After meeting my mentee for the first time, I knew we’d keep in touch for a long time. At the age of seven, she was a spunky and talkative little girl with an opinion bigger than herself. But that was okay with me. Our personalities clicked. Alternatives For Girls really took time out to match us. Now my mentee is nearly 14 and about to enter high school.
Our bond has grown over the years. I’ve become a trusted friend and advisor to her. She has become my little sister. Even my family asks about her and my nieces always have fun hanging out with her.
I am able to share my experiences with her and offer alternatives to the temptations that girls face at her age. We speak open and honestly with each other.
I thank AFG for providing me with this experience. It feels good supporting an organization with ethics that appreciates its volunteers. Being a mentor not only has lasting, postive effects on the mentee, it impacts the spirit of the mentor. My spirits definitely have been lifted as a result of my participation in AFG’s mentoring program.
In addition, out of my participation in the program, I realized that I could support the organization in other ways. I volunteer for special events and donate to its general fund when I can. I love giving back to those who’ve given so much to me. Alternatives For Girls is the type of organization that you feel proud supporting.
