AFG Walk-In Center and Crisis Line

Walk-in Center

Alternatives For Girls provides services for walk-in clients Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Any member of the community in crisis may walk in to discuss their needs in private.  A qualified team of staff and volunteers will determine whether a walk-in person is eligible for AFG services. If eligible for the shelter and a bed is available, she will be housed immediately.  If beds are not available or she is ineligible for any reason, the client will be referred to other reputable agencies.

Walk-in clients have access to a private shower and laundry facilities. They also have access to the AFG Clothes Closet, which is stocked with gently used, donated clothing.  The Walk-In Center also provides information on a wide variety of subjects (e.g., pregnancy and prenatal care; HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases; suicide prevention, etc.).

Crisis Line

AFG also manages a crisis line. People in crisis may call (888) AFG-3919, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Crisis Line staff will put callers in touch with appropriate area service providers including shelter accommodations and child care assistance.

In the Transition to Independent Living (TIL) Program, the final project is to write a paper imagining your life 20 years in the future. This is the life story of a shelter resident and TIL Graduate, and is titled “The Journey I Should Have Packed For”....

It is now 2027 and I am a license nail technician and entrepreneur. My son Michael is in his second year of college majoring in Engineering.

I am now married and love feeling loved. I just recently closed the deal on my first home. I have most of the things I want in life, and I owe it all to Alternatives For Girls. Sometimes, I sit back and think about my life when it was really hard. My child’s father had just turned himself in, and I was back staying with my mother arguing every day. My hands were tied. I was scared to move forward but determined not to go back, so I began calling around for assistance. Two hours into my journey and I was almost ready to give up, I stumbled across AFG.

Upon my arrival, Ms. Patty (AFG Staff) did my intake and then gave me a tour. She also told me the rules. I sat in my room feeling overwhelmed by the boundaries and the rules. My first day was terrible. I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t want to stay in my room, but I had to stay in the shelter for the first 24 hours. But just like my grandmother would say: “You have to go through something to get something.” So, I made up my mind to handle my business. I enrolled in the Transition to Independent Living Program and began my journey. I began to realize as long as I’m occupied then I won’t worry as much. So, I was always doing something, whether it was working in the library, going to meetings or doing my chores. I was pregnant at the time, but I was determined, and Alternatives For Girls was my stepping stone to success.
