families

Girls’
Clubs
Each AFG Girls’
Club includes two-to-three participants and one adult mentor. Clubs
are built around the interests of the girls and mentor. Gardening,
photography, camping, cheerleading, martial arts and poetry have
each been the focus of recent clubs. Girls explore their interests,
adding to their knowledge and hands-on experience. Many mentors
bond with the girls over time and form long-term relationships.
Mentors undergo training and a background check before being matched
with AFG participants. They commit to spending a minimum of four
hours a month on at least two activities with the girls they mentor.
Rise-N-Shine
The annual
Rise-N-Shine Summer Program provides a variety of educational, cultural
and social activities for approximately 50-75 girls. In addition,
retired teachers serve as tutors in math and English to help girls
retain their knowledge and be prepared for the fall school term.
