Shanelle: AFG Made Me Think !

It was just me and my dad…

I thought I was the only person who had it so bad without a mother living at home.

I didn’t have any friends and I didn’t have any money. I needed a job and someone at my high school told me about Alternatives For Girls and the peer education program. I went through the Leadership Training class and got hired as a peer educator in the youth street outreach program. It gives me a chance to talk to other girls and help them. We provide information for 12-20 year olds about safer sex, STDs, HIV+ and AIDS.

I learned some important lessons in my journey here at AFG. I learned that it is okay even when things do not go the way you want; I learned that other people have feeling too. No one is perfect; it is important to stay positive and try to learn something from everything you do.

I learned that I wasn’t the only person without a parent. And I am still blest. My experience here at AFG changed my life. It has made me think and set goals in my life and talk with others about doing the same. I have lots of friends now. AFG is another home for me!
