Alternatives For Girls (AFG) is a Detroit-based 501(c)3 nonprofit serving homeless and high-risk girls and young women. Since 1987, AFG has provided critical services to the girls and young women we serve, including safe shelter, street outreach and educational support, vocational guidance, mentoring, prevention activities, and counseling. The goal is to empower the girls and young women we serve to make positive choices.
Our mission is to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation, and help them to explore and access the support, resources and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong and to make positive choices in their lives.

"Everyday, I am becoming more empowered"
She had nowhere to go. After being forced out of her mother's home, she lived with an aunt, but now their house was being foreclosed.
“I was just going through the motions," she says. She felt no direction in her life. With the support of staff, Tempest has outlined several goals for her life and knows how to get there. She is on track to get her GED, and plans to attend college in fall to study journalism or engineering. "I aspire to be a woman who is intelligent, confident, and successful. Everyday, I am becoming more empowered, spiritually awakened, self-sufficient, and everything else that is making me the best person I can be.”
Tempest says that she was able to be successful because she has her own personal cheerleader in AFG staff. They gave her that push that she needed to realize her goals. They have also worked with her to help her to examine her life experiences.
"Reflecting on my life, I see all of my pain and struggles as a 'necessary evil' to help mold me into the person I am today...ultimately, I want to live with purpose, whatever it is."
