Alternatives For Girls is celebrating success – the success of extraordinary women for their professional accomplishments, personal attributes and community commitment – and the success of former AFG participants who have made positive life decisions and are achieving admirable goals and accomplishments in their own right.
The 23rd annual dinner takes place at the Fillmore Detroit, Thursday, March 29th at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $150. Reception, dinner, silent auction and live auction by Chris Aslanian are included. Don't miss your chance to win a spectacular vacation, stunning jewelry, sports memorabilia, and more. Amyre Makupson, former "Ten O'Clock News" anchor, will emcee the event.
Faye Alexander Nelson--Professional AwardDetroit Riverfront Conservancy, President and CEO
Committed to the revitalization of Detroit, Faye Nelson joined the non-profit Detroit RiverFront Conservancy in 2003 as President & CEO. Prior to joining the Conservancy, Ms. Nelson was Vice President, Governmental Affairs for Wayne State University. She serves on the Board of Directors for Compuware Corporation, the University of Detroit/Mercy, TechTown, the Parade Company and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Nelson is the recipient of numerous awards including “the Grio’s” 100 African American History Makers presented by NBC News, the Milliken Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Environmental Council, and Crain’s Detroit Business as one of Metro Detroit’s Most Influential Women. She has four daughters and is married to Albert Taylor Nelson, Jr., of counsel to Giarmarco, Mullins and Horton, PC.
Carolyn Lett--Community AwardThe Roeper School, Diversity and Community Programs Coordinator
Roeper School’s Diversity and Community Programs Coordinator, Carolyn Lett, has served her school for 18 years. Equity and justice are the foundation and cornerstone of the Roeper School philosophy and she has embodied those ideals. Ms. Lett is chair of the Roeper School “All School Diversity Committee”, the advisor for the middle/upper school Student Diversity Committee and stewards inclusivity in all areas of the school’s programs .Ms. Lett is also involved in local and national diversity work, serving as Chair of the AIMS Southeastern Michigan Diversity Committee and as a member of the NAIS “Call to Action” Committee.
Kristina Marshall, M.Ed.---Emerging Leader
Winning Futures, President and CEO
Since 1998, Ms. Marshall has advanced Winning Futures to be a top-rate school-based mentoring program. As the first mentee in 1994, Ms. Marshall has made the organization her life's mission. With degrees from Michigan Tech and Oakland University, Ms. Marshall has raised $8M, the program has impacted over 20,000 youth, and she has grown Winning Futures to have a national impact through their award-winning life skills curriculum. She is a motivational speaker, co-author of four books, the Chair of the Mentor Michigan Providers Council, and very involved in the Entrepreneurship Organization (EO). Ms. Marshall has been married to her high school sweetheart, Duane, for 13 years and they have an amazing five year old son.
Mandi Murray--Summit Award
St. Joseph Mercy Health System, Attorney
Mandi A. Murray was the First Female Battalion Commander, First Female Brigade Commander and First Female General Officer in the Michigan Army National Guard. She joined the Army National Guard while in high school. She received her nursing degree from Michigan State University. In 1993, Ms. Murray earned her law degree from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law after working as a nurse. She is currently an attorney with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. She deployed to Afghanistan from 2010-2011 where she oversaw the US detention facility and training of Afghan Guard force. Ms. Murray is a Bronze Star recipient.
